‘Comfort access’.. ..is that BMW speak for keyless entry ?
I've never had an E89 with the comfort access option before but from what I understand in addition to keyless entry you also get the ability to close the roof from the key and also adjust the folded roof partitions when closed to access the boot area.

They should all have a rechargeable battery Gary - they charge while in the ignition slot. Supposed to also charge while half inserted.

I've changed one of mine for around £15 (I don't have Comfort either), it was a bit of a phaff but relatively easy if you have a soldering iron.

I'll find the link . . .

Sorry I might not have been clear - here is a better photo of the fob I was referring to which has a relatively easy to remove panel to access the battery.

The other two are the standard sealed unit fobs.

Two separate systems…

‘Normal’ E89 has a rechargeable fob..when it gets tired bigger job to unsolder out that rechargeable battery…

Roof can be lowered but not raised on the fob..

Comfort Access uses a non rechargeable CR2032 battery in the fob which is changed frequently…

Keyless entry , no fob in the slot and raise and lower the roof with CA

Thought I better get a progress thread up for #34 before it goes 🤣

Another unintended purchase but I'd not seen a Valencia Orange car in person before and I liked the look of the interior which is part of the Pure Traction Design package so I thought what the hell and put my money down.

According to the BMW literature Valencia Orange was introduced as an exterior colour option for the 2014 MY and the Pure Traction Design package replaced the Pure Impulse Design package that had previously been available with an Atacama Yellow exterior.

The car is an SDrive 18i that was produced in January 2015 and had done just under 69,000 miles when I collected it.

That one shouldn't be used in the key slot, as it isn't a rechargeable battery. Being lithium ion, it could explode or catch fire if the car tries to charge it.
Hopefully it is just an aftermarket 'dud' key, so hasn't got the circuitry to recognise the charge.

Bought mine off Amazon for £2.49 - I only needed 1, 2 & 3 so I've got 497 spares if anyone needs them 🤣

Keep them and put the 'Garrie West' number on the next ones. You will soon be ordering more! You can get rid of 4 through 34, though. ;)

I did think that but the because I don't have comfort access the car won't start without the fob in the slot - it does look like this was fob used most by the previous owner so I'm guessing there are no issues with using it and it doesn't recognise the charge.

Either way on the basis it just has a standard battery I guess there is no point to me using it in order to keep it charged so I might as well just keep it as a spare and rotate usage between the other 2 fobs

Called at Sytner Sheffield yesterday to pick up the Salmon Relays I'd ordered - £36.22 for the pair.

Then dropped the car off with the company (RS Alloys Sheffield) who are refurbishing the alloys so they could fit the loan wheels. The lad told me that he'd try to fit a set of 16" wheels but they wouldn't clear the callipers so he stuck these on.

Replaced the old relays today which were date stamped 1435 with the new ones which were date stamped 2520 👍

I see you replace these on all the E89s you get but what’s the issue with the relays?

If they fail the roof motor will burnout - so essentially you spend £36 to save £900.

If the relay contacts fuse together (stick in the "closed" position), they create a continuous circuit that keeps the hydraulic pump running even after the roof has stopped moving or after you take your finger off the switch. This causes the pump to run until it burns itself out so forum advise is to replace them every five years.

That said every one of the E89's I've owned still had the original relays fitted when I acquired it.

It's a very simple and cheap preventative maintenance that would give you sleepless nights if you get an issue and you hadn't changed them.
