Operation Rust Bucket is underway! Sitting chatting with EnthuZiaZT and z3cade at Duxford gave me the kick up the butt to get started.

Having taken off the door sills and the front wing, the good news is that it's really solid underneath! The passenger side sill is mainly surface rust, and will touch up really well which is a big relief. As Mike suggested the inner side of the sill is the worst. It's been sanded down and treated with some Hammerite Kurust which should neutralise the rust.

Operation Rust Bucket is being hampered by the poor weather somewhat! Just had to retrieve a rear wheel arch liner from a hedge down the garden, after the wind moved it from the patio

Finding the stone chip coating on the bottom of the sill is tougher to remove than I had anticipated. Did a quick 'Google' and have come across these http://www.weldequip.com/cleaning-fleece-115mm.htm which I'm hoping may do the trick. Angle grinders are really cheap on eBay at the moment.

Sills have now been bead blasted by a local metal company, the stone chip coating gave them some aggro as well! Need to pick them up tomorrow, and I can then assess what to do with them.

Going to pop in to a local vinyl wrapper tomorrow as well to see if I can get a price for my zed. Seems sensible to get the sills wrapped while they are off the car.

Oh dear! Really rather frustrated after picking up the stripped sills after they were bead blasted

Appears the rust was considerably worse than I had first assessed! Also the dents concealed by the stone chip coating are really quite big. This is the worst patch, and you can see daylight through it

This is the passenger front end, so would most likely have taken the most abuse from stone chips!

All is not lost if you are wrapping the car, just buy a couple off ebay, colour match does not matter, otherwise you are left with either welding and filler or fibre glass and filler. It is a good example though of how panels rust, which is from the inside surface out, and the need to wax oyl on a regular basis.

The good from this is that you have found it in time to not be too costly, so now you know the worst.

There are a number of titanium silver face lifts breaking on ebay now.

those are some serious dents from stones, as suggested by zedonist maybe time to look for some good used panels. Could you see the dents at all before they were stripped?

The problem with second hand panels is whether they will be any better than what I have already! You pays your money, you takes your chance Called my local $tealer and a brand spanky new set would be £343.87 from the factory. BMMiniparts quoted about £260 delivered.

Will probably look to see if I can find a local metal worker to see if he can graft a panel in to replace the holes. If that's cheap enough, I'll persevere with these.

Could you see the dents at all before they were stripped?

The stone chip coating is like rubber, so it seems to recover completely flat after the stone impact. Certainly didn't realise they were there before hand!

With second hand ones you can have a look at them off the car, if there is no blistering or visual rust they will be alright, as you know i have bought all second hand panels for my wide body conversion, the side rockers had the normal front scabs, which cleaned up great, no other rust anywhere else, so you can get them, and they were £25 each.

I reckon a metal worker will charge you around £100 - £200 to fix them, few hours work in cutting, bending and welding to a painting finish.

BMMiniparts sounds reasonable for pattern parts.

I think you need to cost up all the options and take the one that best fits your pocket and whether you are wrapping or not, either way you can end up with the same good result.

Dont forget they need to be re-stone chip coated, interesting to understand how resistant wrap vinyl is to stone chipping?

AFAIAA BMMiniparts will supply OEM parts so the price from them is not too bad, however £25 second hand takes some beating.

That's the good thing about breakers you can haggle on the price, I did spend 200 quid in total on rear bumper, two rear wings, two rear inners and the two side skirts, it's not an open market for these guys they have to wait till someone has a need, so if it sat on the shelf for months they will take an offer to release their capital.
