Aircon/recirculation switch illumination

Good evening,

I am just in the process of reinstalling the interior of my 2001 2.2i Z3. All the switches on the centre console are illuminated when the headlights are switched on apart from the aircon/recirculation switch. The aircon/recirculation switch buttons are brightly illuminated when the respective functions are activated.

I was expecting the aircon/recirculation switch to have low level illumination of each button. I am correct in this assumption, please before I go looking for a broken wire, or defective switch?

I didn't know this, as I removed my a/c switches before it ever got dark! Can't think of the reasoning behind this TBH; sounds a bit stupid to me.

Same as why the Z3 remote locking flashes the indicators on lock but not on unlock?
